I.R.D. Duhallow is delighted to announce the 2nd year of the ‘Discover Duhallow a Day of the Region’ Initiative which will run throughout the month of July, throughout the towns and villages of Duhallow. Following the success of the 10day programme last year it has now been extended to a month of various events. The ‘Day of the Region’ initiative is part of a European wide initiative and is a celebration of rural community life. This initiative started back in 1999 in Germany and in 2004 in the Netherlands and was run in over 8 countries in 2012. IRD Duhallow is the only Irish partner in this Initiative placing the region in a very unique position to showcase the Duhallow area. The ‘Day of the Region’ Initiative involves bringing communities together to celebrate the culture and traditions associated with their community and also to revive events from the past. Communities will be supported to organise new events also that will attract locals to become involved and experience what is to offer in their own community. It is an opportunity to showcase what Duhallow has to offer those living here especially those new to the area that are often unaware of what is in their community.

This year Discover Duhallow will run in conjunction with ‘The Gathering Ireland 2013’ which will see all of Ireland opening its arms to hundreds Irish all over the world, calling them home to gatherings in villages, towns and cities.
I.R.D. Duhallow would like to invite your group, along with other groups in your community to get involved in this exciting initiative. Funding is available from I.R.D. Duhallow for community events and similar to 2012, I.R.D. Duhallow will organise the advertising and marketing of these events on a large scale. Examples of events which your group may consider organising range from seisiúns, clan gatherings, cultural events, family days, organised walks, plays and shows etc. I.R.D. Duhallow would encourage communities to try to revive festivals or events which took place in the past but haven’t happened for a number of years. The more adventurous the better! We would also like to see a nice mix of events which we could include in the programme of activities which will attract young and old, male and female.
As the ‘Day of the Regions’, runs for a full month (from 1st July to 4th August), we would encourage all communities not to hold all of their events on the weekends and to instead spread them out during the week days and nights to allow locals to take part and visit as many of the events as possible. Once applications are received IRD Duhallow will call representatives from all groups to a meeting regarding the rolling out of this Initiative.
Please download the application form which you may photocopy if you have more than one event. An outline of costing’s is required also so that we can identify how feasible an event is.
Please complete and return to Helen O'Sullivan no later than the 29th March. This deadline is a requirement as I.R.D. Duhallow requires all events to be confirmed and agreed for the promotional booklet and advertising which will go to print in early June.
If you have any queries, please contact Helen O'Sullivan on 029-60633.
